Beyond Busyness: Leading with Awareness in a Complex World

How often do we respond to โ€œHow are you?โ€ with โ€œIโ€™m busyโ€ as if that somehow validates our worth?

Jennifer Garvey Bergerโ€™s conversation on The Conscious Hospitality Podcast with David Arraya made me realise that busyness is often a mask. A way to avoid checking in with ourselves. A way to sidestep the discomfort of uncertainty.

She invites todayโ€™s leaders to pause and ask: What if โ€œIโ€™m busyโ€ really means โ€œIโ€™m afraidโ€? Afraid of not having control. Afraid of slowing down. Afraid of what we might find if we actually paid attention.

Listening to Jennifer is a masterclass in rethinking leadership not just as a role, but as a way of being. She challenges us to see organisations as ‘schools for grown-ups’, where learning never stops, and where the best leaders create not just places to work, but spaces where people thrive.

A few ideas that stayed with me:

The more we draw our attention to whatโ€™s happening inside and around us, the better we become at leading in complexity.
The moment we notice weโ€™re overwhelmed, a single conscious breath can reset our nervous system.
Whether youโ€™re 12 or 52, we all long for someone to see our potential.
What if organisations are able to create spaces where love and positive regard hold space where people genuinely thrive, and leaders put people before ROIs?

Jenniferโ€™s words made me pause and reflect on my own leadership journey on the spaces I create, the stories I tell myself about being busy, and how I can practice more intentional evolution.

If you ever feel like complexity is overwhelming, this episode is for you.
